I'm sure this has happened to a lot of you many many times. You're with your friends and you're talking to them about this cool game that you have fallen in love with, The Legend of Zelda. All is going well, and they are contributing to the conversation, but then you notice that they start referring to Zelda as a male in green tights, a sword and shield bearing boy, a blond teenager, etc...
There are many people out there 'till this day that still believe that the protagonist in The Legend of Zelda games is a boy named Zelda. Well at least they get one out of the two right, because the protagonist of the series is a boy, but his name isn't Zelda. We all know that his real name is Link, and if you're a fan of the series I'm sure that you have had to correct a lot of people on this topic. The minute that you tell them that Zelda is actually the princess in the game that you have to save, and that Link is the main hero, you see a shocked look on their face. But what happens to the people that know of both Zelda and Link, but just don't know what role they each play in the franchise?
The main reason that we bring this up is to ask you if you feel that this misconception leads people away from the series if they have never played it before. I'm sure by know, unless you have been living under a rock, you know that Zelda is the girl and that Link is the boy. But we're sure that there is still a small percentage of people that just don't know the main story arc of these games.
Our question to you is, do you think that there are people who won't play the games just because they assume that they will be playing with a princess as the hero? It would be funny to find out that the people that don't play Zelda games for that reason play Metroid games. Imagine the look on their faces when they find out that Samus Aran is actually a girl. And a second question. Would you mind if they changed the name to The Legend of Link? Leave your answers down below. And as always, you have just been ChrisCrossed!
I don't think so. Look at Samus. She's a girl, yet the Metroid series is ridiculously popular. Then again, Samus had the help of being thought of as a boy before revealing herself in a blue bikini, dropping jaws that a female could be a badass protagonist. Then, aside from Nintendo, you've got the popular Tomb Raider series.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who looks at a game and refuses to play because of the gender is ignorant to the fact that the gender has nothing to do with the journey. With that said, The Metroid Series is my 2nd favorite series for that reason. The stories are INCREDIBLE and the MP Trilogy still has me running back to run through Tallon 4 time and time again.
